Reverend Basil Ashcroft, Anglican vicar at Tinui, was the originator of the Anzac Memorial Cross, erected on Mount Maunsell (359m) on the first Anzac Day, 25 April 1916. After a brief service at 7.30am, Ashcroft led a small group of residents and Boy Scouts to the summit (referred to locally as Tinui Taipo) where the sections of the jarrah cross were assembled and put in place.
